Legion Group/Applied Metacomputing Spring 2000 Workshop
A joint UVa-Applied Metacomputing spring Legion workshop will be held May 16 and 17, 2000, at the University of Virginia's Computer Science Department. Day one will cover introductory information and a hands-on lab for running applications. Day two will involve more advanced system administration and applications, as well as information on customizing and troubleshooting systems. Participants do not need to attend all sessions.
Most sessions will be hands-on and provide practical instruction. We encourage attendees to bring along their own applications to see how they can be adapted and run with Legion.
Participants from academic, government, and corporate settings are welcome. For more information about Legion, please see our web site at http://legion.virginia.edu.
The schedule is designed to progress from introductory material to more complex issues. Please feel free to attend only those sessions that are relevant to your interests.
All sessions will be held at the University of Virginia in Olsson Hall, Charlottesville, Virginia. There is no charge for participating. Hotel information and other workshop information will be available on this page in the near future.

Day 1
Morning: Legion tutorial
The tutorial will provide background on the Legion
system and teach how to run existing parallel codes
within the Legion environment. This session is aimed at
supercomputer users who are already familiar with
parallel processing tools such as MPI and PVM or have
parameter-space study applications.
The tutorial will consist of an introduction to the
Legion system, philosophy, architecture, and object
model; followed by an in-depth presentation of the
user's view of Legion. We will address issues such
as logging on to the system, compiling and registering
binaries, and using MPI.
Afternoon: hands-on labs running applications on Legion
The labs will demonstrate various kinds of
applications that have already been compiled and run on
Legion, including legacy applications, parameter space
programs, wide-area parallel applications, MPI, and
coupled applications.
Day 2:
Morning: System administration. Topics include:
Building a system
Troubleshooting
Merging systems
Adding new hosts and vaults
Security
Customizing and adding schedulers
Afternoon: Adapting and running new applications
We will discuss the individual needs and requirements of
participants' applications. **Attendence at this session
will be limited by space and time**, so we ask that you
let us know if you wish to attend this session. If
necessary, we will schedule an extra session.
